Description
The last glimmer of the moon as it sets from Mauna Kea at 13,794 ft. Me and another photographer (John) decided to drive over to the ridge to photograph the Milky Way rising in the east. Looking to the west we saw both Subaru (left) and the WM Keck Observatory (center), with the Moon serendipitously setting right over Subaru (the telescope we were observing on that night). Keck 2 was using their adaptive optics laser guide star aimed almost vertically. On the very right side is the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility. Both Subaru and Keck 1 were observing the COSMOS field that night, which was towards the southwest at the time this was taken (4 AM). In the sky the Pleiades star cluster (Na Makali'i in Hawaiian) is visible in the upper left as a tight grouping of stars, and Jupiter is visible as the bright "star" above the Moon.
