Artist's Description

A long exposure of 5 optical/infrared telescopes on the summit of Mauna Kea. From very left to right, is the WM Keck Observatory, NASA Infrared Telescope Facility, Canada France Hawaii Telescope, Gemini Telescope, University of Hawaii 88" telescope, and the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope. The orange lasers are used in Gemini's adaptive optics unit, to correct for atmospheric distortion of light. The north celestial pole (i.e. the North Star) is beyond the left, and the celestial equator is on the right, where several geostationary satellites can be seen.
