Artist's Description
The transit of Venus occurs when Venus passes between the Earth and Sun. Venus appears as a black dot (on the right side) against the Sun's bright disk, similar to a solar eclipse. This transit of Venus occurs in pairs (usually) separated by more than 100 years, with the next one in 2117. This photo captures the rare astronomical event as the pair begins to set over the Rocky Mountains in Colorado in 2012. Clouds can also be seen in the sky, with a small cloud obscuring a small part of the Sun at the top.
